Summary

This position is responsible for implementing, managing, and monitoring the enterprise network and network security infrastructure. The Systems Administrator / Network & Security analyzes business data flow to/from the enterprise systems and designs local and wide-area network architectures that meet performance requirements. This individual also analyzes network security requirements and implements strategies designed to thwart attacks from a wide variety of sources. The Network System and Security Administrator supports all of these systems in a 24/7 environment ensuring that they continually operate safely and at peak performance.

With a total of 470 Bus Operators, we have 228 buses (including standard buses as well as our smaller Passport vehicles, and others) in service at any one time. We plan to continue offering a wide range of transportation options to Long Beach, and to remain ahead of the curve for public transit.

Duties and Responsibilities

More specifically, the individual in this role:
  • Takes the lead role in design, maintenance and configuration of all network infrastructure
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses hardware, software and network problems
  • Performs maintenance, optimization and documentation of network infrastructure
  • Performs maintenance and upgrades during scheduled maintenance windows
  • Manages monitoring of network architecture to ensure high availability
  • Inventories and comprehends the capabilities and usage of our current VPN systems, with an eye towards the eventual design and rollout of a single comprehensive VPN solution
  • Participates in design and implementation of projects, systems, and procedures to meet department goals
  • Maintains and supports network and security infrastructure
  • Responsible for network performance
  • Analyzes network security issues and makes recommendations
  • Actively monitors network systems for malicious activity and attacks
  • Assists in the development and implementation of network use and security policies and standards
  • Acquires, installs, and maintains hardware and software associated with local and wide area networks
  • Participates in an on-call rotation for after-hour and weekend support
  • Researches and evaluates new technologies to determine suitability for LBTs environment
  • Sets up, configures and supports Windows servers, AIX Unix servers and Network Equipment on a TCP/IP network
  • Administers all systems, applications, security updates and carefully document network and server changes
  • Configures and troubleshoot Windows 2003 (IIS), Windows SQL Server
  • Designs, configures and troubleshoots network devices
  • Supports and resolves issues related to IIS, SQL, hardware, software and network.
  • Supports requests for setting up hosting resources: web sites, databases, security and other Internet resources (DNS, email, FTP)
  • Performs a variety of tasks including documentation and improvement of Standard Operating Procedures
  • Complies with all safety regulations as stated in the company safety program, and reports safety-related accidents, incidents, and unsafe work conditions. Attends safety-training programs as required.

Qualifications

Required technical skills:
  • 7-plus years experience as a Network Administrator managing an enterprise level network
  • Solid working experience with Cisco IOS, VPN management, networking topologies, services and protocols. Advanced experience in PIX firewall, VPN, and intrusion detection
  • Experience implementing and administrating common TCP/IP-based services including: DNS, DHCP, HTTP, FTP, SSH, SMTP, etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to produce coherent and organized documentation
  • Understand what excellent customer service is and possess the judgment necessary to operate with a sense of urgency
  • Excellent time management skills with proven ability to effectively multi task
  • Intermediate knowledge of Windows 2000/2003 Active Directory server architecture and services
  • Administration experience in Exchange 2003 is a plus
  • CCNA certification is a plus
  • MCSE Certified or equivalent experience is a plus
  • BS/MS in Computer Science or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 5 years experience LAN/WAN Network Administration
  • Advanced ability to troubleshoot network problems
  • Experience supporting a 24x7 environment
Education and experience:
  • VM Ware ESX Server experience
  • Knowledge of FC SAN
  • Citrix, Citrix Presentation Manager 4.x
  • Solid knowledge of IT concepts, issues, practices, methodologies, and trends, particularly those relevant to Network design and administration
  • Practical knowledge of Windows 2003: Installing and troubleshooting
  • Practical knowledge of Exchange 2003: Installing and troubleshooting
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft SQL 2000/2005 server: Installation, administration, configuration, troubleshooting, backups and restoration.
  • Working knowledge of UNIX - AIX desired
  • Working knowledge Backup/Restore Backup Exec 10.x or 11.x
  • Understanding of complex Network technology
  • Cisco Router and layer 2/3 switch configuration
  • Extreme Networks Switches experience
  • Solid knowledge of networks and protocols: TCP/IP, monitoring (ports and application monitoring tools), security (familiar with common techniques), fire walls.
  • Routing and sub-netting experience
  • Testing/troubleshooting
  • Network printing
  • Blackberry Enterprise Server
  • Sniffer or other tool/packet analyzers
  • 802.11b/g wireless networks configuration and troubleshooting
  • VOIP IP telephony - 3COM desired

Salary Structure

$4,234 - $5,184/month (DOQ) . Long Beach Transit offers an attractive benefit package, which includes vacation, sick and holiday pay along with full medical, dental and vision coverage.
