The C Mechanic performs all types of inspections, minor maintenance and repair on Long Beach Transit's vehicles. Long Beach Transit is rated as one of the best public transportation systems in the nation. LBT maintains a fleet of 228 buses, which includes 60-ft. articulated coaches, a growing number of hybrid gasoline-electric engine coaches, and 30 smaller shuttle coaches. This position, under supervision and training, offers the opportunity for advancement to "B" mechanic.

With a total of 470 Bus Operators, we have 228 buses (including standard buses as well as our smaller Passport vehicles, and others) in service at any one time. We plan to continue offering a wide range of transportation options to Long Beach, and to remain ahead of the curve for public transit.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with all tools of the trade
  • Performs brake relines, preventative maintenance inspections, brake adjustments and inspections and transmission inspections
  • Makes bus changes enroute as needed and may assist with road calls
  • "C" Mechanic may assist a "B" or "A" Mechanic with the more difficult mechanical repairs, inspections or specialized work. Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications

  • Must have a minimum of two years vehicle mechanics experience or equivalent training in this field (diesel experience is desirable).
  • Must have own tools.
  • Basic computer experience, and able to navigate using Windows based software preferred.
  • Must possess a valid California Class C license and excellent safe driving record with the ability to upgrade to a Class B.
  • A current (within last 30 days) H-6 DMV printout must be attached to the application to demonstrate safe driving record (no exceptions).
  • Applicants must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.

Salary Structure

$21.03 per hour with excellent company paid fringe benefits. Must join Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1589.
