Summary

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Operations Supervisor plans, directs, monitors and controls the operations activities required to ensure that efficient, safe and dependable bus service is provided to all Long Beach Transit customers.

With a total of 470 Bus Operators, we have 228 buses (including standard buses as well as our smaller Passport vehicles, and others) in service at any one time. We plan to continue offering a wide range of transportation options to Long Beach, and to remain ahead of the curve for public transit.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assigns coach operators daily work assignments
  • Assigns, schedules and dispatches buses to facilitate effective and efficient delivery of service
  • Maintains effective and efficient radio communication with all LBT operators, supervisors, transit police and support vehicles in service in accordance with LBT policies and procedures
  • Completes all dispatch logs, documentation and data collection requirements for accidents, employee inquiries, maintenance and payroll
  • Makes decisions and initiates/directs action to resolve problems related to service delivery and disciplinary action
  • Coordinates bus changes and detours and communicates to those involved
  • Reviews and acts on all paperwork received during the course of the work shift
  • Provides exemplary leadership
  • Observes service delivery, assesses stops, equipment, routes and schedules for deficiencies and makes recommendations to improve service delivery
  • Reports unsafe road conditions, sets up detours to maintain service following accidents, breakdowns or when routes are impassable
  • Investigates and analyzes accidents to determine cause, report findings and recommend corrective action
  • Responds to customer and disruptions
  • Interprets and administers the labor agreement
  • Schedules Extra-board operators to ensure adequate staffing to efficiently meet service requirements
  • Performs minor field maintenance on equipment
  • Relieves bus operators in emergencies and complete schedule if necessary
  • Takes action to correct and/or report unsafe conditions or actions to the Safety Officer; insures that personal protective e1quipment is worn when necessary; investigates and reports all accidents and incidents, and issues warnings per disciplinary procedures for violations of company safety and health procedures

Qualifications

  • Three (3) years experience as a Coach Operator with a good safe driving record, discipline record and overall work record, or an equivalent combination of transit operations experience
  • Working knowledge of transit operations software including communication (radio) system software applications and operation (Motorola or equivalent), operator management and bidding/scheduling software applications or any combination of ITS software applications
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. Supplemental education or training in business, transportation, safety or relevant area is preferred
  • Operational experience with operator management, bidding/scheduling software applications, or any ITS software application is a plus
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a California commercial driver's license A or B, with an unlimited passenger endorsement and airbrakes endorsement
  • Must have strong computer skills
  • Good attendance and safety records with no more than 4 counted absences/or late arrivals and no missouts in the past 12 months
  • No chargeable accidents or disciplinary actions in past 12 months
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform duties and responsibilities of the Road, Extraboard, Dispatch, and Communications Supervisor
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of administration, supervision, and training
  • Ability to understand and follow both written and oral directions
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports accurately
  • Ability to make decisions and solve problems effectively
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
  • Willingness to work all shifts and all days of the year including holidays
  • Previous first line supervisory experience is required
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with electronic information and communication systems
  • Must have an excellent safe driving record and be able to travel between the company's two facilities
Successful candidate must pass company/DOT physical which includes drug and alcohol screen.

Salary Structure

$4,369 - $5,350 per month (DOQ), with excellent fringe benefits.
