It is the mission of Long Beach Transit to provide public transportation services that enhance and improve the quality of life for the people in our community. The Operations Supervisor accomplishes this by planning, directing, monitoring, and controlling the operations activities required to ensure that efficient, safe and dependable bus service is provided to all Long Beach Transit customers. The Operations Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of transit staff and coach operators.

Here's a quick look at the organization you will join: we provide 22x7 public transportation for Long Beach and other neighboring cities. With a total of 470 Bus Operators, we have 228 buses (including standard buses as well as our smaller Passport vehicles, and others) in service at any one time. We plan to continue offering a wide range of transportation options to Long Beach, and to remain ahead of the curve for public transit.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Schedules employees and equipment to facilitate effective and efficient delivery of service
  • Communicates effectively and efficiently with all LBT operators, supervisors, transit police and support vehicles via radio; makes decisions beyond the scope of operations assistant dispatch personnel.
  • Initiates action to resolve problems related to service delivery and disciplinary action
  • Supervises up to 25 bus operators as group supervisor.
  • Evaluates bus operator performance and provides coaching, feedback, and discipline; demonstrates exemplary leadership
  • Appraises service delivery, assesses stops, equipment, routes, and schedules for deficiencies and makes effective plans and recommendations to improve service delivery.
  • Establishes bus changes; sets detours and communicates changes to those involved
  • Decides daily on any deviations from service or additional service required based on immediate changing conditions. Must be able to process information and make quick decisions.
  • Assumes command role at the scene of accidents; investigates accidents and reports findings to company legal department and general counsel.
  • Responds to customers and disruptions which are beyond the coach operators scope or ability to resolve.
  • Administers the labor agreement, and must be knowledgeable in labor relations.
  • Develops work plans and schedules extra-board operators to ensure adequate staffing to efficiently meet service requirements
  • Evaluates system operations and makes effective recommendations for manpower planning, training, and the development of company and department procedures.
  • Plans major company operations events and trains and assigns manpower for same.
  • Offers effective recommendations regarding the development and oversight of computer purchases, support functions and applications for use in dispatch and road supervision in the daily operation of company service
  • Troubleshoots minor problems which may occur with the computer software applications used in operations including HASTUS, Teledispatch and the Advanced Communication System (ACS) programs used by the department
  • Provides a leadership role in the development of computer-generated projects for the operations department, and participates in the selection and testing of systems and software that will be used in the Operations Department.
  • Provides intra-and inter-department advice and recommendations on company programs and special projects
  • Takes action to correct and/or report unsafe conditions or actions to the Safety Officer; ensures that personal protective equipment is worn when necessary; investigates and reports all accidents and incidents, and issues warnings per disciplinary procedures for violations of company safety and health procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree preferred or high school education with supplemental education or training in business, transportation, safety or relevant area.
  • Past experience in similar business, especially supervision of bus operators.
  • Working knowledge of transit operations software including communication (radio) system software applications and operation (Motorola or equivalent), HASTUS and operator management and bidding/scheduling software applications or any combination of ITS software applications, Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel.
  • Must have excellent communications skills and be able to communicate professionally and effectively with all levels of company management personnel, customers, and others as required.
  • Leadership and supervisory skills necessary.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Must possess ans maintain a valid CA Commercial California Driver's License (Class A or B) with air brake and passenger endorsements and a valid Medical Examiners Certificate.
  • A safe driving record is required.

Salary

$4,369 to $6,551 month (DOQ), , with excellent fringe benefits. Long Beach Transit offers an attractive benefit package, which includes vacation, sick and holiday pay along with full medical, dental and vision coverage.
