The Requirements
To be a good fit for the Mechanic opportunity you must have:- 2+ years of vehicle maintenance experience or equivalent training in this field.
- Your own complete set of personal tools that meets company requirements.
- Solid computer proficiency and experience with computer diagnostics, etc.
- A valid California driver's license and the ability to upgrade to a California Class B Commercial License, which requires that you:
- Are at least 21 years of age.
- Have held your California driver's license for at least two years.
- The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Buses or heavy equipment.
- Electrical/electronic systems.

We'll ask qualified candidates to provide a current H6 from the California DMV.
We conduct random drug testing.
The Role
You will join a team of 60 Mechanics and you may work at either one of two maintenance facilities in Long Beach, which are only about seven miles apart. Long Beach Transit maintains a large fleet, which includes CNG, hybrid, 60-ft. articulated, and diesel buses. The majority fall into the alternative fuels category. As a Mechanic, you will perform the full range of repairs, inspections, and maintenance, including working on a variety of electrical systems.More specifically, you will:
- Demonstrate safe working practices.
- Troubleshoot service and repairs of diesel, CNG, gasoline hybrid, and battery powered propulsion systems.
- Work with all tools of the trade, including bus computer based diagnostic software programs.
- Perform all preventative maintenance inspections.
- Perform inspections and maintain air systems and air brake components.
- Perform detailed electrical repairs and diagnose component failures.
- Perform suspension repairs and maintenance.
- Perform diagnosis and repairs for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.
- Work independently while performing over-the-road repairs.
- Perform engine and transmission diagnosis and repairs.
- Assist other mechanics as needed.
- Learn new technologies as needed.

Professional developmentWe'll set you up for success with an extensive training program over your first eight to nine weeks on board. In addition to bringing you up to speed on the latest power technologies, we'll make sure you are familiar with a variety of electrical and electronic systems. We'll also cover repair techniques, safety and more. We also offer an annual tool allowance for Mechanics who meet certain requirements.
Career options
While we place most new mechanics in the "C" classification, we'll also evaluate your experience and aptitude so that you could be placed in "B" or even "A" classification. Under supervision and training, you will have the opportunity to move up to "A" level.

Our entire fleet, for example, has been converted to ultra-low emission fuels, and we operate the country's first and largest gas/electric hybrid fleet. The story of Long Beach Transit has been filled with challenges, accomplishments, and lots of excitement. Long Beach Transit has earned an excellent reputation since its formation in 1963, for everything from its good on-time record, safety for its passengers and the public, and cleanliness and reliability of the bus fleet, to the popularity of its bus operators.
